Resumen
Biomedical technology innovation holds great promise for the application of stem cells in regenerative medicine. To this end, revolutionary cellular reprogramming techniques have been developed, enabling the production of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells and future replacement tissues for any individual. Several groups, including our lab in Leiden, have recently adapted iPS technology to understudied and very rare mammalian species, including the northern white rhino. We propose the use of stem cell and banking technology as a new concept for biodiversity research, pathogen behavior in wild animals, and a resource for cellular rescue of species.
