Frontiers in Genomics: Claudia Gonzaga
Human Genomics for Precision Health in Mexico and Latin America

abril 7 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Resumen de la plática:

The development, implementation and improvement of genomic technologies has revolutionized the research, diagnosis and management of human diseases. From exome sequencing, and more recently whole genome sequencing, of patients with suspected genetic disorders to the large-scale sequencing of biobanks and population cohorts. However, the genomic revolution has not impacted all populations equally, and in most low- and middle-income countries, including those from Latin America, implementation of genomics for precision health is lagging behind. Latin American or Hispanic individuals are severely underrepresented in genomic studies, and the lack of investment and support for the implementation of novel technologies within countries in the region severely impairs the capacity of Latin American populations to benefit from genomic advances. Some ongoing efforts and regional initiatives to advance the implementation of genomics for precision health in Mexico and Latin America will be discussed. Leveraging large biobank and population genomics initiatives we can start to identify genomic variation of biomedical interest in Mexico and Latin American populations.
